Mondo Las Vegas:
More about The Las Vegas Strip - General Introduction:Why did the Strip develop the way it did? Architectural historian and author of "Viva Las Vegas - after Hours Architecture," Alan Hess explains that, "Developers were attracted to the larger pieces of property, lower taxes, and fewer restrictions of county land out on the highway." Strips joined traditional downtowns and more lenient legal attitudes towards illicit activities on the outskirts of town.Guy McAffee, police captain, vice squad commander, Los Angeles gambler, and owner of the Pair-O-Dice (91 Club) on the Strip gave the street its moniker. The Sunset Strip in West Hollywood used to be a bastion of nightclubs, gambling joints and other dens of iniquity. When it was finally incorporated into the city of Los Angeles, many gamblers moved on to Sin City. And thus, Mr. McAffee affectionately named Las Vegas Blvd. after his favorite old street back in L.A. Gambling was legal in Nevada when it became a state back in 1864. Prohibition struck in 1909 and shortly after, gambling was outlawed in 1910 (where even flipping a coin to see who buys a round of drinks was illegal). Gambling was legalized again in 1931 and when Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Las Vegas was ready to party! The first gaming license in Las Vegas was issued to a downtown Fremont Street gambling hall.
