Mondo Las Vegas:

Las Vegas Roadside Motels

The Strip and mainly on Boulder Highway
(On the Strip | Downtown Scene | Boulder Hwy) Head southwest on Fremont Street and take it all the way towards Boulder City

More about Las Vegas Roadside Motels:

When the automobile was mass produced a whole new form of roadside art and architecture was born including the roadside motel. With the auto providing a more egalitarian means of travel, the common could find car parks, tourist cabins and courts along the highways and byways. Early designs of these courts were U shaped and later L shaped facing the highway, many featuring cabins with private garages alongside each room. The buildings were set close to the road so as not to be missed and provide convenience for the weary traveler. As competition increased between these tourist rest stops, each wanted to show off its spacious layout and the setbacks from the street grew larger and motels often included pools or grassy play areas out front to entice families to stop. Unique identifying signage became more important when the motels moved away from the curb.

Many of the hotels and casinos of the 1970s and 1980s went back to having little or no setbacks with their facades bombarding the street. And now, the new architecture of Las Vegas has gone back spacious streetside facades flaunting fountains, waterfalls, and streetside shows. In architecture as in anything, fashion always goes in and out of style.

Although most of the roadside motels on the Las Vegas Strip have vanished - though not all enjoy the ones left especially downtown) amazingly there are still quite a few to enjoy along Boulder Highway. There are also a few scattered north of downtown. See them and take lots of photographs while you can...
