More about MGM Grand #2:

MGM Grand #2 was designed by Veldon Simpson in 1993 on the site of 1975 Marina Hotel. The original MGM is where Balley's now stands at the Southeast corner of Flamingo.

The original design was an homage to The Wizard of Oz complete with rainbow carpet. Well, it didn't last long and Dorothy and her pals are gone from the front main dome inside, but the real live lions are worth a look if you are nearby. The coolest thing is that the monorail in back which originally linked you to Bally's was supposedly recycled from the Disneyland park folks. Now the new monorail extends from the MGM on the south end all the way up to the Sahara Hotel on the northern end.

There used to be a gold cubist lion entrance that featured in the tv commercials when the casino first opened. Rumor has it that walking through through the mouth of a lion was considered bad feng shui and drove away certain gamblers. The newer entrance flanked by gold lions is not quite so 'grand.'
