More about Dunes Hotel and Casino:
The Dunes Hotel was built by John Replogle and Robert Dorr, Jr. in 1955 with tower and additions by Milton Schwarz in 1964.
The first installation of the Dunes had a huge 30 foot tall fiberglass "giant man" Sultan over the porte cochere and boasted a 90 foot long swimming pool and lagoon. In 1957 "Minsky Goes to Paris" (aka Minsky's Follies) at the Dunes was the first show to feature topless showgirls.
Perhaps the most missed landmark on the strip would be the classy Dome of the Sea eatery, imploded along with the famous 180 foot tall sign (Lee Klay, Federal, 1964), on Oct. 15, 1998. By the way, the sultan lived out his retirement on the Dunes golf course from 1964 until he "burned out" in 1985.
The Bellagio was built on the site of the Dunes.
